Editing for Retention, Not Just Aesthetics
4 min read
Most editing is judged by how it looks. Distribution editing is judged by one thing only: how long people keep watching.
The metric that matters
In short-form, the algorithm is a retention machine. It promotes videos that hold attention and buries videos that lose it. So the only editing question that matters is: does this cut keep people watching?
What retention editing actually does
- Tightens the first 3 seconds. The hook has to earn the next 3, or nothing else matters.
- Cuts dead air and filler. Every pause that isn't intentional is a place people scroll.
- Paces the visual change. The brain needs a change every 1.5–3 seconds a cut, a zoom, a caption, a b-roll.
- Reinforces the spoken point. Captions and text aren't decoration; they double the message for sound-off viewers.
What it doesn't do
- Add effects that don't serve the point.
- Over-polish until it feels like an ad.
- Make it "cinematic" at the cost of pace.
The proof
A simply-edited video with great retention outperforms a beautifully-edited video with poor retention every time. The algorithm doesn't have eyes. It has a retention graph.
We edit for the graph, not the gallery. That's why the content grows.
