Hot Takes: How to Be Contrarian Without Being Reckless

4 min read

A good hot take is the fastest way to become known. A bad one is the fastest way to become a cautionary tale. The difference is discipline.

Why contrarian content works

The feed is full of safe, hedged, agreeable takes. They're invisible. A take that disagrees clearly, specifically, with reasoning cuts through precisely because most content doesn't.

Contrarian content says "this person thinks for themselves." That's the foundation of a personal brand.

The rules of a good hot take

  1. Believe it. A take you actually hold is defensible. A take you're performing collapses under pushback.
  2. Be specific. "Most marketing is broken" is noise. "Most B2B marketing is just sales enablement pretending to be demand gen" is a take.
  3. Have a reason. A contrarian position with no reasoning is trolling. One with a framework is thought leadership.
  4. Attack ideas, not people. The line between bold and reckless is whether a person feels targeted.
  5. Be open to being wrong. The best contrarians update publicly. That's a feature, not a weakness.

What to avoid

  • Takes about individuals.
  • Takes on topics you don't understand.
  • Takes designed purely to provoke.
  • Takes you wouldn't defend in a room of peers.

The payoff

A founder with two or three well-reasoned contrarian positions becomes "the founder who thinks X." That label is worth more than a thousand safe posts. It's what makes you referable, quoteable, and eventually the person people come to for the opinion.

Be bold. Be reasoned. Be the take.
